The Art of Incense: A Tradition of Culture and Fragrance

For many in Asia and Africa, burning incense is not just a ritual but a cherished tradition deeply rooted in their cultures for centuries. While it may seem foreign to some in the West, burning incense offers a window into a world of hospitality, elegance, and spirituality.

In Arab countries, burning Bakhoor (incense) is a heartfelt gesture of hospitality. Guests are welcomed by passing the incense burner around the gathering, creating a warm, fragrant atmosphere that reflects generosity.

Incense also plays a key role in personal grooming rituals. In many parts of the Middle East, women use fragrant woods, such as agarwood, to perfume their clothes and themselves. The subtle yet long-lasting aroma clings to the skin and fabric for hours, offering a unique olfactory experience.

What is Bakhoor?

Bakhoor is made from a blend of carefully selected woods, resins, herbs, and flowers. The result is a rich, aromatic experience that varies depending on the ingredients and blends used. All our Bakhoor products come from trusted manufacturers who uphold the highest quality standards.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Burning Incense

  1. Prepare the Charcoal: Use quick-light charcoal tablets that ignite easily. Hold the charcoal with tongs or tweezers and light it with a flame.
  2. Set the Charcoal in Place: Place the lit charcoal in a heat-resistant incense burner or a dish filled with 1–2 cm of sand. Allow the charcoal to heat for about 5 minutes until it glows.
  3. Add the Bakhoor: Sprinkle a small amount of Bakhoor or resin on the glowing charcoal. The fragrance will rise with the smoke, filling the room with a delightful aroma. For tablet form Bakhoor, one-quarter of a tablet is usually enough.
  4. Enjoy and Repeat: Once the incense has burned, remove the remaining ash from the charcoal and add more Bakhoor if desired.

You can use a candle burner or aroma lamp for an alternative, gentler way to enjoy incense. Place a small amount of resin or Bakhoor on the burner dish, light a tea candle underneath, and enjoy the slow release of fragrance.

The Wonders of Frankincense

Frankincense, derived from the resin of trees growing in the Arabian Desert, has been prized for centuries for its scent and medicinal properties. Historically, it was used to cleanse spaces and promote healing. Its antibacterial properties were even employed during the Middle Ages to combat diseases like the plague. Today, it is cherished for its therapeutic qualities, soothing both body and mind.

Tips for Safe Use

  • Always use heat-resistant tools and surfaces when burning incense.
  • Keep the incense burner away from flammable materials and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Allow proper ventilation in the room to prevent smoke buildup.
  • Never leave burning charcoal or candles unattended.
